Fifty five years ago in 1970, eight courageous student athletes on the Syracuse University football team decided to boycott the season, to take a stand against racial inequality and to demand fair treatment and equality at all levels for all athletes and students. This act of courage by these eight student athletes led to a national awakening of integrity, unity, and justice among collegiate athletics. Because of their efforts, the Syracuse 8 have been recognized by Syracuse University's highest honor, the Chancellor's Medal of Extraordinary Courage, as well as a Syracuse 8 Scholarship, and the Syracuse 8 Courage Award. In addition, there are permanent tributes inside the JMA Wireless Dome (the "Dome") and the John A. Lally Athletic Complex (Manley Fieldhouse). These tributes add to the recognition of the impact that the Syracuse 8 athletes made in 1970, and continue to have today. The Urban Sports Hall of Fame of Syracuse, NY is honored to recognize, in its 28th year, the Syracuse 8 as inductees in the Class of 2025.
